Bernard Tschumi's 2009 glass museum aligns its top floor exactly with the Parthenon to display the frieze in original orientation, with pointed gaps for the marbles still in London. Glass floors reveal an excavated ancient neighborhood beneath the building.

The marketplace where Socrates argued and democracy was administered, anchored by the remarkably intact Temple of Hephaestus and the reconstructed Stoa of Attalos museum. It is greener, quieter, and more evocative at ground level than the Acropolis above.

The greatest collection of ancient Greek art on earth: the gold Mask of Agamemnon, the bronze Artemision Zeus, the Antikythera Mechanism. Budget two hours minimum just for the Mycenaean and bronze galleries.

Athens' highest hill at 277 meters, topped by the whitewashed chapel of St George and a view that takes in the Acropolis, the port of Piraeus, and the Aegean. A funicular from Kolonaki saves the 20-minute pine-forest climb.
Insider tip: Take the funicular up for sunset and walk down through the pines; carry water as the summit café is pricey.

The only stadium in the world built entirely of marble, reconstructed on its ancient footprint to host the first modern Olympics in 1896. The audio guide lets you climb to the upper tiers and stand on the medal podium.
