A working bazaar since 1382, its alleys split into districts for gold, copper, spices, and lamps. Push past the souvenir rows and the workshops off al-Muizz Street still hammer brass by hand.

Islamic Cairo · $
Saladin's 12th-century fortress crowns the Mokattam spur, topped by the alabaster-clad Mosque of Muhammad Ali. The ramparts give the definitive panorama of Cairo's minarets, with the pyramids hazy on the horizon.
Insider tip: Visit before noon for the clearest views, and do not miss the smaller An-Nasir Muhammad Mosque beside the famous one.
Islamic Cairo · $
A kilometre of Fatimid, Mamluk, and Ottoman monuments, the densest stretch of medieval Islamic architecture anywhere. The Qalawun complex and its carved facades are beautifully floodlit after dark.
Insider tip: Walk it twice: by day to enter the monuments, and after sunset when locals reclaim the street and the stonework glows.
