The strip's only major resort-free public beach: wide sand, big rolling surf, and the much-photographed rainbow CANCUN sign on the dune. Palapas and lifeguards are free.
Insider tip: Come before 9am to photograph the sign without a queue; currents are strong, so swim near the lifeguard towers.
Zona Hotelera (Km 16.5) · $
A sleek elevated museum holding hundreds of Maya artifacts, with a jungle path down to the San Miguelito ruins beneath it—resident iguanas included. It is the strip's best rainy-day culture fix.
Insider tip: One ticket covers museum and ruins—wear insect repellent for the jungle walk and go at opening.
Zona Hotelera (Km 18) · $
A compact Maya site of 47 structures where a coastal trading settlement once watched over the lagoon, now patrolled by sunbathing iguanas. You will often have it nearly to yourself.
Insider tip: Pair it with Playa Delfines across the boulevard, and go early—there is almost no shade.
Punta Nizuc & Isla Mujeres reefs · $$
Hundreds of submerged sculptures by Jason deCaires Taylor and collaborators, sunk as artificial reef starting in 2009 and slowly being claimed by coral. You snorkel the shallow galleries or dive the deeper ones.
Insider tip: Snorkelers should book the shallow Punta Nizuc circuit; certified divers get more at the Manchones reef galleries.
Riviera Maya (45 min south) · $$
An eco-archaeological mega-park where you float down underground rivers past Maya ruins and aviaries, capped by a 300-performer night show retelling Mexico's history. It is expensive and worth one full day.
Insider tip: Buy tickets online in advance for the discount and stay for the evening Xcaret México Espectacular—it is the highlight.
El Centro · $
Downtown's sprawling crafts market—hammocks, talavera, silver, and embroidered guayaberas—wrapped around courtyard fondas serving proper Yucatecan lunch plates. Half the experience is the haggle.
Insider tip: Counter the first price by half and settle around 60–70%; eat at the interior fondas where the taxi drivers lunch.
