Newlands · $
Founded in 1913 on Table Mountain's eastern slopes, Kirstenbosch showcases fynbos, ancient cycads, and the canopy-skimming Boomslang walkway. Its summer sunset concerts on the lawns are a Cape Town rite.
Insider tip: Sunday sunset concerts (November to April) sell out, so book ahead and bring a picnic blanket.
Simon's Town · $
A colony of endangered African penguins nests between granite boulders on a sheltered False Bay beach. Boardwalks put you within a few metres of the birds without disturbing them.
Insider tip: Use the Foxy Beach boardwalk for the closest views and arrive before 10am to beat the tour buses.
Cape Peninsula · $
The peninsula ends in 250-metre sea cliffs at Cape Point, with an 1859 lighthouse above and ostriches and bontebok grazing the fynbos plains. The funicular is named the Flying Dutchman, after the ghost ship.
Insider tip: Drive in via Chapman's Peak Drive, arrive before 9am, and never feed the baboons; they will mug picnics.
Waterfront · $
A working Victorian harbour folded into Africa's most visited shopping-and-dining district, with seals lounging on the jetties. Zeitz MOCAA and the Watershed craft market anchor the culture end.
