At 828 metres the world's tallest building offers observation decks on floors 124, 125 and 148, with the desert curving away beyond the towers. On clear days you can watch the sunset twice — once from the ground, again from the top.
Insider tip: Book the 'prime time' sunset slot online weeks ahead, or go at 8.30am for cheap tickets and no crowds.
Burj Lake, Downtown Dubai · $
The world's largest performing fountain shoots water 150 metres high, choreographed to Arabic, classical and pop tracks every 30 minutes each evening. Designed by the creators of Las Vegas's Bellagio fountains, it plays across a 30-acre lake.
Insider tip: Shows run every half hour from 6pm; watch free from the Souk Al Bahar bridge or pay a few dirhams for the boardwalk 'Fountain Views' platform.
Downtown Dubai · $
The world's most-visited mall holds 1,200 shops, an Olympic-size ice rink and a three-storey aquarium tank with sand tiger sharks visible free from the concourse. It connects directly to the Burj Khalifa and fountain promenade.
Insider tip: Enter via the Metro link bridge, drop pins for your parking zone if driving, and see the aquarium tunnel after 9pm when families thin out.
Al Marmoom / DDCR, Dubai desert · $$
Dune-bashing in 4x4s, camel rides, falconry and a sunset over rust-red sands are the classic Dubai counterpoint to the skyline, capped with a barbecue camp under the stars. Premium operators like Platinum Heritage use vintage Land Rovers inside the protected reserve.
Insider tip: Pay extra for a conservation-reserve operator — smaller groups, real wildlife (oryx, gazelle) and far better food than mass-market camps.
Bur Dubai / Dubai Creek · $
Restored wind-tower houses from the 1890s hold cafés, galleries and the Coffee Museum, a short walk from the Creek where wooden abra boats cross to Deira for one dirham. It is the last surviving piece of pre-oil Dubai.
Insider tip: Cross by abra to Deira's Spice and Gold Souks around 5pm, then ride back at dusk when the Creek lights come on.
Sheikh Zayed Road, Trade Centre · $$
A torus of stainless steel inscribed with Arabic calligraphy, this 2022 landmark stages immersive floors on space habitats, ecosystems and wellness set in the year 2071. The building itself was named among the world's most beautiful.
Insider tip: Tickets sell out days ahead — book online, take the 10am slot, and photograph the exterior from the Emirates Towers metro bridge.
