Insider tip: Bike across to Sausalito and ferry back; summer mornings are clearest before the afternoon fog swallows the towers.
San Francisco Bay · $
The Rock held Al Capone and the Birdman during its 29 years as a federal penitentiary, and its award-winning audio tour is narrated by actual former guards and inmates. Ferries depart from Pier 33.
Insider tip: Tickets sell out weeks ahead in summer — book directly with Alcatraz City Cruises and take the first boat or the night tour for thinner crowds.
Richmond / Sunset · $
A 1,017-acre green rectangle — bigger than Central Park — holding the de Young Museum, the California Academy of Sciences, a Japanese Tea Garden, and a resident bison herd. JFK Drive is now permanently car-free.
Insider tip: Rent a bike and ride the museums-to-ocean route west, ending at the Dutch windmill and Ocean Beach.
Fisherman's Wharf · $
Hundreds of wild California sea lions haul out on K-Dock, a free spectacle since they colonized it after the 1989 earthquake. The pier's carousel, chowder stands, and Alcatraz views make it the city's most-visited stop.
Insider tip: See the sea lions early in the morning, then escape the crowds toward the Hyde Street cable car turnaround and Ghirardelli Square.
Marina District · $
Bernard Maybeck's rosy Beaux-Arts rotunda and colonnade were built for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition and reflect in a swan-patrolled lagoon. It's the city's favorite picnic and photo backdrop.
Insider tip: Go at golden hour on a weekday, then walk Crissy Field's waterfront path toward the Golden Gate Bridge.

Frank Oppenheimer's pioneering hands-on science museum fills a bayfront pier with 600-plus exhibits you're meant to touch, from fog bridges to the pitch-black Tactile Dome. Thursday evenings go adults-only with cocktails.
Insider tip: Book the Tactile Dome separately when buying tickets, and consider the 18+ Thursday night session to skip the school groups.
