A former 1901 grocery turned cabinet-of-curiosities bar, its five rooms lined floor-to-ceiling with toy soldiers, model planes, and Victorian bric-a-brac. Waiters in white jackets serve classic cocktails and there is a snooker table in the back room.
Insider tip: Ring the doorbell to be let in and ask for the illustrated menu; the sangria and gin fizz are house staples.
Bairro Alto · $
Lisbon's original rooftop hideout, planted with greenery on the top deck of a multi-storey car park on Calçada do Combro. The view over Santa Catarina's rooftops to the 25 de Abril bridge at sunset is the city's favorite golden-hour ritual.
Insider tip: Enter through the car park elevator to the 5th floor, then walk up the final ramp; arrive before 6pm for a sunset spot.

A closet-sized stand-up bar pouring sour-cherry ginjinha liqueur since 1840, from the recipe of Galician friar-adviser Francisco Espinheira. Locals knock back a shot on the square at any hour, debating 'com ou sem elas', with or without the cherries.

Príncipe Real · $$
Opened in 2005 by London bartender Dave Palethorpe, this dim, sofa-lined room quietly trained a generation of Lisbon's best bartenders. The encyclopedic menu runs from perfect classics to playful house creations served without pretension.
