Friedrichshain (Mühlenstraße) · $
A 1.3-kilometre surviving stretch of the Wall painted in 1990 by 118 artists, including Vrubel's Fraternal Kiss between Brezhnev and Honecker. It remains the world's longest open-air gallery.

Five museums on a Spree island, from Nefertiti's bust in the Neues Museum to the Caspar David Friedrich canvases of the Alte Nationalgalerie. The colonnaded ensemble is UNESCO-listed in its own right.
Insider tip: Note the Pergamonmuseum is closed for long-term renovation — buy the island day ticket and prioritise the Neues Museum.
Mitte (near Brandenburg Gate) · $
Peter Eisenman's 2,711 concrete stelae rise and fall over undulating ground a block from the Brandenburg Gate, disorienting by design. The underground information centre documents victims' family histories.

Mitte (Alexanderplatz) · $$
The GDR's 368-metre statement piece from 1969 is still Germany's tallest structure, with a viewing sphere at 203 metres and a slowly rotating restaurant above it. In sunlight the sphere flashes a cross — nicknamed the 'Pope's Revenge'.
