Mitte (Bergstraße courtyard) · $$
Hidden in the brick courtyard of a 19th-century former brewery, serving its famous twelve-hour Duroc pork 'candy on bone' to a candlelit room. The courtyard is one of Mitte's loveliest summer seats.
Insider tip: Order the candy-on-bone pork for two and reserve a courtyard table in summer.
Kreuzberg (Mehringdamm) · $
The kiosk that made Berlin's vegetable-loaded chicken döner world famous — roasted veg, feta and a squeeze of lemon over the meat. Queues regularly top forty-five minutes and it is still worth it.
Insider tip: Go late morning or mid-afternoon to shorten the wait; Curry 36 next door is the consolation prize.
Kreuzberg (Mehringdamm) · $
Berlin's benchmark currywurst stand since 1981, slinging sausage in curry-dusted ketchup to cabbies, clubbers and suits at all hours. Standing tables only, exactly as it should be.
Insider tip: Order 'mit Darm' for the snappier natural casing, with fries 'rot-weiß' — ketchup and mayo.
Kreuzberg (under the U1 viaduct) · $
A burger counter inside an ornate 1900s public-toilet pavilion beneath the elevated U1 tracks. The Meisterburger with crispy onions and the cheese fries justify the inevitable queue.
Insider tip: The queue looks long but turns over fast; it is the canonical late-night stop after Kreuzberg bars.
Mitte (Klosterviertel) · $
Berlin's oldest restaurant, trading since 1621, where Napoleon and Mikhail Gorbachev both reportedly dined. Order the Eisbein — crackling pork knuckle with sauerkraut and pea purée.
Insider tip: Request the seat by the antique tiled stove when booking — it is the historic table.
